Mountains Turn White For October
The mountains did see their first snowfall Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The staff at the Lectone Lodge on Mount LeConte reported 4″ of snow was on the ground Wednesday morning. What is really fascinating is that the mountains got their first snowfall last year in 2023 on the exact same date, October 15-16. According to the National Park Service, elevations above 3700 feet saw some snow in the park, while the high elevations saw up to 4 inches.
Newfound Gap Road had to be closed Wednesday morning due to ice and snow on the road. The main highway through the national park reopened around 11am Wednesday morning.
