NS Railroad Trestle Collapses
Flood waters caused some damage to the Norfolk Southern Railroad trestle across the Pigeon River several weeks ago. This morning, that trestle basically broke in half and sent each half pointing down towards the river. The broken railroad trestle has led to the closings of some adjacent roadways. Closed until further notice are:
River Rd. at E. Broadway, Jimtown Rd at E. Broadway, and Liberty Alley at E. Broadway/River Rd.
The Newport to Asheville run of that railroad has been closed due to damage to the railway caused by Hurricane Helene. Norfolk Southern had hoped to have the Newport to Asheville run of the railroad back up by the end of January. The run between Newport and Morristown was reopened earlier this month.
