I-40 Closed Due To Accident
I-40 east was closed for several hours Wednesday in Jefferson County. This after a car transporting nuclear medicine vials lost control, crossed the cable barriers in the median and rolled over multiple times. Two of the three containers with nuclear medicine were compromised in the crash and a haz-mat team had to be called in to handle the situation. Nuclear medicine is used by doctors to treat cancer and other conditions.
The driver of the car was not injured, but a Jefferson County deputy was exposed to the medicine, but is expected to be okay. Traffic was diverted onto US25/70 via exit 424. Traffic was them routed back onto the interstate at exit 432. I-40 was reopened around 3pm.
