School Voucher Program Opening Today
The application period for Tennessee’s new School Voucher Program is opening today, May 15. Earlier this year, the Tennessee General Assembly passed Governor Bill Lee’s school voucher plan that will allow public school students to apply for a voucher that will go towards the tuition to a private school. These are called Education Freedom Scholarships. The dollar amount the vouchers provide is around $7,000.
10,000 scholarships are being made available for students, regardless of income.
Another 10,000 scholarships will be awarded to eligible students who meet certain criteria, including having an annual household income that does not exceed three hundred percent (300%) of the amount required for the student to qualify for free or reduced priced lunch as provided in the income eligibility guidelines published by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services. For a family of 4, that income level is $173,160. Also the student has to have previously enrolled in and attended a Tennessee public school one (1) full year immediately preceding the school year for which the student received an educations savings account.
The application period for Education Freedom Scholarships for the upcoming 2025-26 school year opens at 1pm eastern time today, 5/15. to apply, go to the website: https://www.tn.gov/education/efs
