JCSO Warning Of Vehicle Break-Ins
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office is warning about a series of vehicle break-ins lately. However, the sheriff’s office says most of the vehicle “break-ins” aren’t BREAK-ins at all. They are the result of vehicles being left UNLOCKED by the owner! The Jeffersn County Sheriff’s says these are the definition of a Crime of Opportunity.
The sheriff’s office says if a thief isn’t given the opportunity to break into a car and steal, they will move on to somewhere else. They don’t necessarily want to break the glass or the door, mainly because they don’t want to draw attention to themselves by setting off the alarm or breaking the glass itself.
If everyone makes it more difficult for these types of criminals, then the number of vehicle break-ins WILL go down. The sheriff’s office also reminds you to not leave valuables in your vehicle. That includes things like cell phones, purses, wallets and laptop computers or tablets. Park your vehicle in a well lit area, and if you have a garage, put your car in the garage if you can. If they can’t get to your vehicle, they can’t break into it.
