Man Killed Riding Scooter Chair Across Cosby Highway
A man was killed Friday morning in Newport after he tried to cross Cosby Highway in a motorized scooter chair. Newport police say that 63-year-old Mark Sutton was on a motorized scooter and attempted to cross Cosby Highway from the Kenjo Market to the Best Western motel. A man driving a 1999 Oldsmobile says that he spotted Sutton coming across the highway, but that Sutton stopped in the right lane of southbound traffic, and the driver says he had no time to stop and hit Sutton on the scooter. A witness traveling in the southbound lane as well confirmed the drivers’ story. Sutton was non-responsive and had no pulse when police arrived. CPR was attempted, but efforts to resuscitate Sutton were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car showed no signs of impairment. He voluntarily took a blood test. No charges have been filed pending the result of that test.
