CCSO Marking National Police Week
This week the nation is celebrating National Police Week. It’s a week set aside each year mainly to remember law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. On Wednesday, May 13, there will be a candlelight vigil on the National Mall in Washington DC.
Locally, area counties and cities will have events honoring local law enforcement officers who paid the ultimate price to keep the public safe. The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office will have their annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Friday, May 15, at the Cocke County Courthouse. The event begins at 8:30am and the public is invited to attend. Morristown will host a similar event Friday morning at the Hamblen County courthouse, where they are also providing blue bows free to the public to display during the week in honor and recognition of law enforcement.
National Police Week dates was established by Congress in 1962 and signed by President John F. Kennedy, designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
