TBI Reports Crime Decreased In 2020

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s 2020 ‘Crime in Tennessee’ report, which gathers crime data from the state’s law enforcement agencies, showed there was a decline in reported crime for 2020. The TBI states that Covid-19 definitely affected the numbers. According to the data, there were 506, 558 group A offenses reported in the state…those are offenses that include crimes against persons, like rape or murder, crimes against property like arson, fraud, and theft, and crimes against society like animal cruelty, drug crimes, and prostitution. The 2020 numbers were a 5% decrease from 2019.

State-wide domestic violence-related murders went up in 2020…with 94 reported in 2020 and 85 in 2019. Reports of aggravated assault, stalking, incest and kidnapping offenses related to domestic violence also increased in 2020. As far as demographics of crime…Males made up 69.2% of those arrested and 66% of those arrested were white while half that number… 33% were Black. Ages 25-34 saw the highest number of arrestees. As far as crimes against…52.9% of the victims of group A offenses were female…that number of female victims jumps up to 71.6% in domestic violence cases.
