Five Deaths Now Confirmed In Haywood County NC

Haywood County NC officials confirmed Sunday that the death toll for last week’s flooding is now 5. All of the victims lived in the Cruso community southeast of Waynesville.

Two of the victims were identified last Thursday as 86 year old Frank Mungo, and 68 year old Franklin McKenzie. On Friday officials confirmed the deaths of 73 year old Judy Mason and 83 year old Charlene Mungo. The fifth victim was located on Sunday, and his family has been notified. That man is 74 year old Frank Lauer, Sr. Family members of all victims have been notified. One person still remains unaccounted for as of Sunday evening…crews spent most of Sunday looking for that person. County officials reported that 95% of power has now been restored to the hardest hit area of the flood which was the Cruso community. In a bit of good new, the shelter that had been open at an area school has now been closed as it is no longer needed.
