Haywood County NC Schools Need Millions To Repair Flood Damage

The flooding in Haywood County NC last month claimed 5 lives in an area southeast of Waynesville. Now the estimates are starting to come in at just how much damage was done to the area and what it will cost to repair. The Haywood County school district announced yesterday that damage to their facilities add up to $12 million. The estimate to repair damage done to the Central Haywood High School in Canton is $5 million by itself. Damage to one school’s football and baseball facilities is going to cost another 3.4 million dollars. An official with Haywood County schools says the district’s insurance will pay some of the $12 million in damage caused by the flooding, but help from FEMA will be crucial in their ability to rebuild and repair.

Speaking of…yesterday it was announced that FEMA had approved almost $800,000 in housing and needs assistance for flood victims. More than 100 people, including children, are still living in shelters following the severe flooding caused by the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred last month. Some 525 claims have been filed so far with FEMA.

It’s estimated that there is also $8.9 million in damage to state-owned bridges and roads.
