Weigel’s Victim Of Scam
Police were called to Weigel’s on Cosby Highway over the weekend for a scam report. Police spoke with Brandy Van Daley of Weigel’s. Van Daley who stated she had received a phone call from a man claiming to need payment authorized by her manager….whom they called by name. Van Daley said the man told her she was to pay for fire marshal inspection permits. The man instructed Van Daley to make an initial payment of $2000.00 via Bit Coin at the nea by Marathon station. After Van Daley made this payment she then was called back by the man and instructed to make another payment of $5,500.00 at a another Bit Coin service location. Van Daley said she also made that payment. Van Daley realized this may not be legitimate and contacted her manager. Van Daley turned over multiple receipts to her manager which totaled up to $7,500.00 in Bit Coin payments. Van Daley showed Police the number from which the man called. That turned out to be a spoof number supposedly located in Mexico City.
A similar scam happened a couple months ago at another business in Newport.
