Last Day For Tax Free Groceries
Today is the final day of August. That means today is the final day that groceries will be tax free in the state of Tennessee. All the month of August, Tennessee has enjoyed a tax holiday on all non-prepared food items. Things like milk, eggs, bread, sugar, flour and any other non-prepard food items in the grocery store are tax free again today. Items that have not been a part of the tax free holiday are alcohol, dietary supplements, candy and tobacco items. As of midnight tonight, the 4% tax on groceries in the state of Tennessee returns.
There are two other tax holidays that will continue for a while. First, state vehicle registration fees continue to be free for Tennesseans. That is just for the state fee. The state reminds you that any county taxes, such as a wheel tax, still have to be paid. Also gun safety devices such as gun locks and gun safes continue to be tax free in the state. Both of those tax holidays end on June 30, 2023.
