Woman Struck And Killed On Highway In Haywood County NC

A woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle in Haywood County, North Carolina over the weekend. Haywood County authorities say that Saturday afternoon, 71-year-old Laura W. Habernack, of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, was crossing US Highway 19 from Lake Junaluska to a campground when she was struck by a pickup being driven by 68-year-old William T. Mayes, of Gaffney, South Carolina. Police say that Habernack was not in a crosswalk when she was hit. EMS provided medical aid but Habernack died at the scene. Mayes, the driver of the pickup truck, was not injured and so far no charges have been filed against him.
