More Work On I-40 through Pigeon River Gorge
Get ready for some more traffic issues when traveling through the Pigeon River Gorge on I-40 in Haywood County North Carolina. NCDOT says work begins today on the replacement of two bridges on I-40 between mile markers 18 & 20. Construction on the two bridges will take place at the same time. Construction crews will allow one lane to remain open in each direction in that area, but NCDOT says drivers should expect delays, especially when traffic is heavier such as during the weekend. This is a two year project. However…the one lane closure in each direction will be in effect until May 20th…then the interstate will be reopened completely. The lane closures will then resume in October of 2023 so that crews can complete the bridge work. This is part of a project to replace five aging bridges on the 20 mile stretch of I-40….the recent replacement of the Harmons Den bridge at exit 7 was part of that project.
