Man Charged With Animal Cruelty After Leaving Three Dogs In Car
Newport police responded to the Motel 6 on Heritage Blvd. over the weekend after three dogs were found locked in a car with the windows rolled up. The dogs also had no food or water. The car came back as a rental car through Enterprise rented to a 68 year old Christopher Speechley. Motel staff told police that Speechley was registered to a room on the third floor and that they allow two dogs per room free, but there is a $10 charge for each additional dog. Police spoke with Speechley, who had a dog in the room with him, stated that he was checking on the other dogs in the car every three hours. Motel staff stated that the dogs had been in the car for at least two hours before police arrived. Newport Animal Control was called and they took possession of the three dogs. Speechley was charged with animal cruelty.
