Man Arrested For Theft Under $1,000
Newport police responded to a call about a theft. The victim told police he had lost his wallet by accidentally dropping it in the City Grocery parking lot Friday night. He stated that since, his Chime bank card had been used at various locations including Walgreen’s and Sonic in Newport. Police watched video from the City Grocery’s parking lot where they observed the wallet in the parking lot at 9:50 pm Friday. At 5:36am, a man police recognized as 29 year old Colby Shelton pick up the wallet and thumb through it. The investigating officer then went to Walgreen’s and watched video that showed Shelton at that location at 5:52am purchasing groceries with the stolen bank card. Police knew that Shelton was staying in a homeless camp on Jimtown Rd. and located him there. He was then placed under arrest for Theft Under $1,000.00 and Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card. Shelton admitted to picking up the wallet and using the Chime card at Walgreen’s, Westend Citgo, and Sonic. Shelton stated he then attempted to return the wallet y dropping it in a mailbox.
