Police Standoff In Haywod Co NC
More details have been released about a police standoff earlier this week in neighboring Haywood County NC. Police in Waynesville say that Daron Tate fired two shots at another man, missing both times. That prompted multiple calls of shots fired flooding into Haywood County 911. Police arrived at Daron Tate’s residence where he fired upon officers with a rifle, an officer then returned fire. Tate refused to come out of his residence and a standoff ensued between Tate and police. Authorities cut power to the house, evacuated nearby residents and diverted school buses from the area. They even had Tate’s mother call him trying to get him to surrender, but he still refused. The standoff finally ended about 3 1/2 hours later when officers shot tear gas into the home and entered the residence along with a K-9. They found Tate in the home, injured by a gunshot. Investigators believe that the wound was not self-inflicted and was non life threatening.
The officer who exchanged gunfire with Tate is on administrative leave over department policy while the shooting is under investigation. The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation is now handling that case., including what led up to the original shooting.
