Two Sevier Co Residents Arrested After Resisting Arrest
Two people now face charges of resisting arrest and one of them is also charged with assault after Cocke County deputies pursued a vehicle on Cosby Highway south of Newport Tuesday afternoon. Cocke County Sheriff’s office LT. Max Laughter had spotted a Silver Nissan Sentra traveling northbound on Cosby Highway. The vehicle had tags belonging to a Chevrolet and no muffler but did have items hanging from underneath it hitting the roadway which could have caused a potential roadway hazard. The Nissan then increased its speed trying to evade being pulled over. The driver of the Nissan, later identified as 32 year old Lewis Kovach of Kodak did a U-turn in the area of the National Guard Armory and headed back south. Kovach then turned onto Bogard Road and finally came to a stop past the Friendship Road intersection. Laughter blocked the Nissan’s driver door with his patrol car while Captain David Robertson arrived to assist. Kovach was removed from the car and immediately began to resist arrest and fight with deputies. Meanwhile a female passenger, Amber Lawson of Sevierville, began fighting with Robertson to keep him from assisting Laughter. Both Kovach and Lawson were finally taken into custody. Both have been charged with resisting and Lawson is also charged with assault.
