Newport Police Capture Street Bike Driver Eluding THP
A Tennessee Highway Patrol pursuit ended in Newport when the suspect was caught by Newport police. According to the report, THP had gotten into a pursuit with a white and black street bike but lost that vehicle. Officer Justin Shelton spotted the bike near the Sunoco station on west Broadway in Newport and attempted to stop it. However the driver of the street bike took off at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles on McCabe Ave on the wrong side of the road. Shelton pursued the street bike onto Good Hope Rd where the driver then veered into a hay field and slowed down and then fell over with the bike. The driver then took off on foot running into a wooded area, where Officer Shelton was able to catch him. 30 year old Jerry Stevens was the suspect on the bike. A large crystal of methamphetamine weighing 17 grams was found on Stevens along with a set of digital scales. Shelton has been charged with manufacture, sale or delivery of meth, plus evading arrest and reckless driving. Stevens’ license was also found to be suspended out of Kentucky.
