DOE Gives TN Schools Letter Grades…High Schools In Cocke County Rated Poorly
On Thursday, the Tennessee Department of Education released their 2022-23 School Letter Grades. Those grades provide a snapshot of how each school in the state is doing in meeting the state’s expectations for learning. Several factors determine the letter grades for each school, including student achievement, academic growth, growth of the highest need students, and a measure of college and career readiness just for high schools. So, how did local schools do?
Not well, according to the data. The state gave Cocke County High School a “D” grade. The grades were based on a number system with a score of 4.5-5 being an A, 3.5-4.4…B; 2.5-3.4…C; 1.5-2.4…D; and 1.0-1.4…F. Cocke County High School scored a 1.9.
The score ranked the high school at 53.9% as far as college & career readiness. The ACT 21+ score was 21.7%. As far as individual subjects, Science was the highest rated for the school with Social Studies ranking second.
On the other hand, Newport Grammar School scored an A with a score of 4.6. Science and social studies were the strongest subjects followed by math. Smoky Mountain Elementary in Cosby had the only other A grade and the highest grade in Cocke County with a score of 4.7.
