Newport Woman Victim Of Scam
A Newport woman was the victim of a scam from someone claiming to be from “Microsoft”. The victim says she was on her computer last week and noticed lights flashing i\on indicating she had a virus. A message popped up supposedly from Microsoft stating they were attempting to “fix her account” because someone had charged her Chase credit card in the amount of $10,000.00. The victim gave out the information needed to supposedly fix her account, but she later realized it was a scam as her Chase credit card does not have a $10,000 limit. The next day, she noticed two transactions she did not authorize totaling $1,700.00 were charged via PAYPAL using her debit card and bank information. Police say the scammers were able to get the victim’s IP address, but most importantly had acquired her social security information. The victim has since contacted her financial institutions as well as the social security office. She also has received a new IP address from her Internet Service Provider.
