Reed Defeats Huffhines For Assessor Of Property

Voter turnout was low yesterday as less than 3,000 voters went to the polls for the March 5 primary election. This was the presidential primary for the republican and democrat parties but it was also the Republican primary for Assessor of Property in Cocke County.

In that race, Macie Reed defeated her challenger Barry Huffhines by a healthy margin of 56.5% to 43.6%. Reed won both the early voting tally and with voters on election day. The final vote count was Reed winning 2,896 votes to Huffines’ 2,223.

Huffhines was able to win seven precincts on election day, with his biggest win coming in the National Guard Armory precinct. It was the Early Vote and wins at the Del Rio, Grassy Fork, Cosby, Smoky Mountain and Edwina precincts that made the difference for Reed. She won 58% of the early vote and then won handily at those five precincts to seal the victory.

What this means for Macie Reed is that she will retain the position she was appointed to a couple years ago. Voters saying that they believe she is doing a good job have handed Reed the job in her own right. Since there is no Democrat candidate running in the general election, which is August 1, Macie Reed will retain the job as Assessor of Property in Cocke County.
