Weekend Accident Leaves Debris Along Roadway
If you have seen some debris at the intersection of Cosby Hwy and Epley Road south of Newport, that debris was from an accident that happened over the weekend. According to a report from the Cocke County Sheriff’s office, Joseph Webb was driving a Toyota Camry southbound on Cosby Hwy when a Chrysler sedan pulled out from Epley Road and struck the passenger side of the Camry. The driver of the Chrysler then fled the scene. A witness told police a few minutes later that a Chrysler with no front bumper had just pulled into the Lowe’s parking lot. A Cocke County deputy found 24 year old Bradley Smith of Morristown at the Lowe’s with the vehicle. Smith admitted he had been drinking at a birthday party before driving. He stated he fled from the accident because he knew he would be in trouble. An open container of alcohol was found in the Chrysler sedan. Smith was charged with DUI second offense and leaving the scene of an accident. Joseph Webb, the driver of the Toyota Camry was transported to the hospital with a possible concussion.
