Newport Man Arrested For Assault
A Newport man was arrested for assault Thursday after he spit on fellow motorists. Police responded to a call from a motorist about a possible drunk driver going at a high speed down East Main Street. The police attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver of the red Tacoma pickup accelerated then turned on Rock Hill Road and was quickly out of sight. The motorist that called 911 told police that the driver of the Tacoma was 34 year old Jeremy Jones. They stated that Jones pulled next to them at the stoplight of Broadway and Cosby Hwy and then spit on them. Jones was located at his home on Rock Hill Road. He told police that the motorists in the other car were” brake checking” him on West Broadway, so he pulled even with them at the stoplight and an argument ensued and he admitted spitting on the driver and the passenger. When asked by the officer why he did not pull over when he was being pursued, he stated he would have had he known it was the police. Jones is being charged with two counts of assault plus evading arrest and reckless driving.
