Sales Tax Holiday Starts Friday

Newport Grammar School getting ready to go back to school as well. Teachers will be back in class next Wednesday, July 31 as they get ready to welcome back students, The first day of school is on August 5, which is registration day. School will be dismissed at 10am that day with students returning for their first full day on Thursday, August 7.

In Cocke County, students get back to class on Friday August 2. The final day of the school year, as of right now, is set for May 21 for Cocke County Schools and May 23 for Newport Grammar School.

This weekend is the sales tax free weekend in Tennessee. Starting Friday at 12:01am and going through Sunday night at 11:59pm, school supplies, clothing and computers are tax free. There are some restrictions. Clothing items have to cost less than $100 each to be tax free. Any item of clothing that has a cost higher than $100 will still be subject to tax. That $100 restriction also goes for school supply items.

As far as computers…Computers for personal use with a purchase price of $1,500 or less will be tax free.

Laptop computers, if priced at $1,500 or less, also qualify as well as tablet computers costing less than $1500.

However, storage media, software, and printer supplies are exempt and will still be subject to the tax.
