Accused Killer Of Blount Co Deputy Appears In Court
The man accused of shooting and killing Blount County deputy Greg Mc Cowan and shooting and wounding a second deputy, Shelby Eggars, had his first appearance in court this morning in Blount County. Kenneth Dehart, who is being held in the Loudon County jail, was in court to look at assigning him counsel and to set a preliminary hearing date. That preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday, February 20 at 9am. An attorney representing Dehart told the judge that Dehart’s family was working on retaining counsel for this case.
Kenneth Dehart is charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder and being a felon in possession of a handgun. He was captured Tuesday afternoon in East Knoxville. According to Blount County Sheriff James Berrong, Deputy Greg McCowan’s handcuffs were used to take Dehart into custody.
Kenneth Dehart’s brother Marcus Dehart, who is charged with accessory after the fact, had a bond hearing on Wednesday. A judge lowered his bond from $1 million to $10,000. He posted bond and is now out of jail. His next court date is March 25.
