Bill Allowing Teachers To Carry A Gun Deferred
A bill in the state legislature that would allow teachers to carry guns in schools will not be passing during this session. Earlier this week, lawmakers decided to defer the bill to 2024. The bill states that faculty and staff members wanting to carry would be required to obtain a handgun carry permit and complete a minimum of 40 hours of training. They would also need jointly written authorization from the director of schools, the principal of the school, and from the local law enforcement agency. Under the bill, teachers could only carry a gun in the school in which they are employed but could not carry in auditoriums or stadiums where school events are taking place. The bill is now deferred until January 23, 2024. This is the fifth time the bill has been deferred since the end of January.
