CCSO Warns Of New Scam
The Cocke County Sheriff’s office warning of a new scam. In this scam someone calls you and says that a family member has been arrested in Asheville North Carolina. They are asking for you to help post their bond of up to $15,000.00. They will provide you with a case number and to make the scam seem even more real, they will have a fake public defender call you from a separate number to set up the transaction.
The sheriff’s office reminds you that no public defenders nor anyone in public safety will call you to post bonds or go to the bank and get money out. DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY BANKING INFORMATION. In fact, you should never give banking information to anyone over the phone, unless you know for sure who you are dealing with. The sheriff’s office suggests that if you get a call such as this, just simply hang up.
