Cocke Co Man Charged With Killing His Father
A Newport man is in jail after fatally shooting his own father. According to the Cocke County Sheriff’s office, they were called to a home on Rankin Hill Road in Newport early Wednesday morning regarding a shooting. When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a man lying on the living room floor dead from a gunshot. Witnesses in the home say that 33 year old Garrett Cameron was standing in the front door area of the home, holding a firearm, yelling at his father Gary Cameron and demanding the keys to a vehicle. When Gary Cameron asked what was going on, Garrett Cameron shot his father, killing him.
Witnesses told investigators that’s when Garrett Cameron turned the gun on them telling them that if they did not give him the keys, he would kill them as well.
Cameron grabbed a set of keys then ran outside. He attempted to start one vehicle, but the keys did not work. He then successfully started his father’s vehicle and fled from the scene. However, deputies on their way to the scene intercepted Garrett Cameron as he was attempting to flee. He was taken into custody at that time.
Garrett Cameron faces a long list of charges, headlined by first degree murder. Cameron was taken before Sessions Court Judge Mark Strange, who set his bond at 2 million dollars. Cameron is being held in the Blount County jail. He is due in court on September 22.
