Cocke County Ambulance Involved In I-40 Crash
Two people were killed and three injured in a crash that happened early Saturday morning on I-40 East. That accident involved an ambulance from Cocke County. According to Knoxville police, A vehicle was driving eastbound On I-40 near Mile marker 402 around 6:30am when that vehicle was struck from behind by a second vehicle. The first vehicle came to a rest on the roadway, while the second vehicle rolled over, rollling across all three lanes then landing in the median. The driver of that vehicle was ejected and was rushed to the UT Medical Center. The driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
A third vehicle pulled up after the crash and that person got out to try to assist the person in the first vehicle. That person was then struck by a Priority Ambulance that could not stop in time to avoid a collision. That ambulance was on its way from Knoxville to Cocke County. The person hit by the ambulance was killed. Both the driver and the passenger in the ambulance suffered minor injuries. The ambulance did not have a patient inside. I-40 East was closed for several hours and was reopened around 11:45am. That accident remains under investigation.
