Cocke County Man Facing Several Charges After High Speed Chase
What should have been a simple traffic stop turned into more over the weekend. A deputy with the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office had observed a White Subaru Outback turn down Bogard Rd at a high rate of speed. The deputy then followed and watched the Subaru come to a stop in the middle of the road before speeding off again. The vehicle was also swerving from lane to lane. When a traffic stop was attempted, the driver of the Subaru took off at a high speed reaching up to 80 mph on Bogard Road. The pursuit then entered Sevier County, and the driver turned right onto Jones Cove Road where he then passed a vehicle on the wrong side of the roadway. The Cocke County deputy then terminated his pursuit, but alerted Sevier County authorities. Sevier County was able to stop the vehicle farther down on Jones Cove Road. 21 year old Nathan McMahan was taken to the Sevier County jail and faces charges there. He also faces seven charges in Cocke County including Reckless Endangerment with a vehicle and Reckless Driving.
McMahan told police he fled because he has eleven points on his license and did not want any more. There were two other individuals in the vehicle with McMahan that were put in danger. They were transported back home by police.
