Fire At Recycling Building In Newport
A fire continues to burn this morning at a recycling warehouse in Newport. That fire broke out last night around 9pm. A Newport police officer, along with several concerned citizens first reported spotting the fire around 9:15pm at Scott Recycling at 131 Vernor Avenue. Huge plumes of smoke could be seen in that area. Numerous fire departments responded to that fire including the Cocke County Fire Department, which is located just a short distance away. The fire is located behind the Jefferson Cocke County Utility District property on Hwy 25E. Crews from that utility along with Newport Utilities and the Cocke County Emergency Management area also responded to the scene. There is no confirmation regarding what started that fire, but it is still burning this morning. Fire crews say the fire could burn all day today due to plastic that was stored in that building. Law enforcement and fire crews ask that unless you have to be on Hwy 25E, that you stay off that highway for now. No injuries have been reported with that fire.
