Grocery Tax Holiday Starts Today
Many East Tennessee residents took advantage of the state of Tennessee’s sales tax holiday on school supplies, clothing and computers. If you ventured over to Pigeon Forge and Sevierville you found out first hand.
Starting today, there is a new sales tax holiday in Tennessee and this is for the entire month. Starting today, grocery items are tax-free in the state. The items that are tax-free are food and food ingredients. Items such as bread, eggs, milk, butter, flour, sugar, potato chips, meat and fish, and such.
What is not included in the sales tax holiday are things like alcoholic beverages, tobacco, candy, dietary supplements, and prepared food….which means food at restaurants. Those thongs you will still pay taxes on. The grocery tax holiday is for the entire month of August. Below is a list of some of the items that are tex exempt in the month of August:

Beverage powders (other than dietary supplements)
Biscuit mix
Bottled water (carbonated, flavored, sweetened or unsweetened)
Bouillon cubes
