Hwy 25/70 Back Open In NC, With Restrictions
US 25/70 is now back open in North Carolina, but is down to one lane only in Hot Springs. However, this does open up a key artery into western North Carolina. Now, the business route of 25/70 through Marshall, NC remains closed. Many roads in western North Carolina are still in very bad shape and many remain closed at this time. Western North Carolina is open to essential traffic only.
I-40 is getting closer to reopening through Cocke County. TDOT crews are working to reopen the interstate by moving eastbound traffic over to the westbound side. There will be one lane of traffic in each direction from exit 447 to the state line, but it will be open to local traffic only. Parts of the eastbound side of I-40 between mile marker 448 and the state line were washed away during the flood on September 27. There is no timetable on when the eastbound lanes could be repaired or rebuilt. The interstate will remain closed at the state line due to heavy damage in North Carolina. On that side, I-40 is closed from the state line to exit 20, the entire length of the Pigeon River Gorge.
