Jillian’s Law Heads To Governor’s Desk
The bill dubbed “Jillian’s Law” is headed to the governor’s desk, this after both the house and the senate approved the bill. The legislation passed the senate by a unanimous vote. The house passed the bill without a no vote, but four house members abstained from voting. “Jillian’s Law” is named after Belmont University student Jillian Ludwig who was shot and killed last November. She was killed by a man who had been released from custody after being deemed not competent to stand trial.
“Jillian’s Law” requires that instead of being released if found incompetent to stand trial, that the individual be committed to a mental institution until they are deemed competent or until the court approves an outpatient treatment plan. The legislation also prohibits the purchase or possession of a firearm by that individual.
Governor Bill Lee is expected to sign “Jillian’s Law”.
