Man Arrested After Choking Woman

One person was arrested after attempting to strangle a woman in Newport Wednesday. Catherine Carroll told Newport police that she and 59 year old Randy Cashen had gotten into a verbal argument that turned violent. Carroll says that Cashen had his finger in her face and when she told him to calm down, he pushed her down into a chair, then put his hands around her neck and began choking her. Ms. Carroll in self defense, says she scratched Cashen’s stomach in attempts to get him to stop. Police observed marks around her neck and arms and scratch wounds on Cashen’s chest and stomach confirming her account of what happened. Cashen was taken into custody charged with Aggravated Assault. Ms. Carroll was offered medical treatment that she refused.
