Man Arrested After Pursuit
A man was arrested in North Carolina after a pursuit that began in Newport Sunday morning. According to Newport police, an officer spotted a white sedan with North Carolina plates that was swerving back and forth on Cosby Highway near I-40. The car’s tag came back to being registered to a Ford F-150 pickup. When the officer attempted to stop the sedan, that driver took off at a high rate of speed. The driver turned onto east Hwy 25/70, running red lights and nearly causing several accidents. That pursuit, with speeds in excess of 100 mph, continued outside the city limits and was terminated after crossing the North Carolina line near Hot Springs.
The Madison County, NC Sheriff’s office took over the pursuit. There were able to finally stop the vehicle in Hot Springs. The driver was identified as 49 year old Daniel Landers. Charges are being filed against Landers in both Cocke County and Madison County NC. However, Landers had to be transported to a hospital after being stopped, as he had ingested fentanyl.
