Man Arrested After Standoff With JCSO
A tense situation in Jefferson County Monday night ended peacefully with a suspect in custody, but this after a nearly five hour standoff. Deputies were dispatched to a home in the New Market area shortly before 7pm. Upon arrival deputies were met by the victim who stated that her son had assaulted her and pointed a handgun to her head and made threats to kill her. The victim, another female, and a three month old child were able to exit the residence safely before deputies arrived. Deputies made contact with the suspect, who made threats to shoot law enforcement and at one point, law enforcement heard what they thought were gunshots coming from inside the residence. Along with Jefferson County deputies, teams from White Pine, Jefferson City and the Sevierville Police Departments responded to the scene. Teams attempted to deploy tear gas into the home, but the suspect had barricaded the windows making that difficult. So, the Sevierville SWAT team used a bearcat with an extended ram to breach the windows of the residence at which time tear gas was deployed into the residence. Shortly after the gas was deployed, the suspect appeared at the back door and surrendered. Taken into custody was 43 year old Joshua Mumford. He is charged with Aggravated Domestic Assault.
