Man Faces Several Charges
Newport police arrested a man Monday night after he pointed a gun at others during a confrontation. According to the police report, witnesses differed in their version of events, but a vehicle had come upon a person trying to turn a trailer onto a side road in the vicinity of Buckingham Drive and Morrell Springs Road. A confrontation happened between parties and a black male in a red two door Honda had pointed a gun at others. Police spotted the red Honda, which was pulled over on the Morrell Springs I-40 overpass. The black male in the Honda was identified as 35 year old Charles Lawrence Ellis IV, who was found to have been convicted of a felony in Kentucky in 2009. A Taurus 9mm handgun was found in the vehicle. Ellis claims that the people with the trailer had threatened him, but that he never pointed the weapon, a claim the others denied. An extra loaded 9mm magazine was also found in the car with 22 loose 9mm rounds in a cup. 13.1 grams of marijuana was also found in the car. Ellis faces several charges including possession of a weapon by a felon, aggravated assault and possession of schedule VI.
