Man Leaves Scene Of Accident On Cosby Highway

Newport & Cocke County police both responded to a crash at Cosby Hwy and the Cosby Cut-off Road intersection Wednesday night. Jerry Raines stated he was stopped at the red light when a Jeep struck his vehicle from behind. The driver of the Jeep…37 year old Clifton Gray had fled the scene. Cocke County police found that jeep a short time later on Cosby Hwy going 70 in a posted 55 zone. Gray was under the influence of both alcohol and a central nervous system stimulant. An open moonshine jar was located within the vehicle, as well as a marijuana grinder. Also located… a 9mm Beretta handgun loaded with a total of 14 rounds. Gray has been charged with a long list of offenses including DUI…possession of a handgun while under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
