Many Set To Travel This Week for Holiday
Over a million Tennesseans are expected to be traveling this week for the 4th of July weekend. The AAA says they forecast that 1.6 million people in the state will be traveling at least 50 miles or more away from home now through this Sunday, July 7. That is up from 1.5 million who hit the road last year for the fourth. Of those traveling this week, 1.4 million are expected to drive to their destination while about 71,000 are expected to fly.
Either way, the AAA says that travel will cost a little bit less this year as gas prices are a little lower than last year and AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to 2023.
Nationwide, the AAA predicts that nearly 71 million people will be traveling this week.
If you are going to be driving for the holiday, you will not have road construction to slow you down in Tennessee. TDOT will be suspending all construction-related lane closures on interstates and state routes for the holiday. That halt on construction projects will begin at noon on Wednesday, July 3 and continue till 6am on Monday July 8. TDOT reminds drivers that they may still encounter some long-term lane closures on construction projects. While other lane closure activity will be stopped, workers may still be on-site and reduced speed limits in work zones will still be in effect.
