More EBT Theft
A Newport woman alerted police this week that she had been the victim of theft with her EBT card. The woman told Newport police that her EBT card had two charges on it that she did not make…one for just under $500 and the other for $363…for a total of $863. The woman stated she did a search on the internet about how to dispute charge made on your EBT card, and she found out then the charges had been made at 2016 West 199th Street, in Chicago, IL. She also found posts and news articles online showing other people having charges posted to their EBT cards from that same address in Chicago. The woman stated that only she and her son have access to her card and it was still in her possession. Newport police have informed her that any investigation would have to be done by the Chicago PD as that is where the crime was committed.
The Newport area went through a period last year where residents’ EBT card information was being used elsewhere, mainly at an address in New York City. The Stat of Tennessee recommends you follow charges on your EBT card closely to stay on top of any possible fraud.
