Morristown Business Falls Victim To E-Mail Scam
A Morristown business has fallen victim to an e-mail scam. Karen Armes at Precision Flooring in Morristown told police that she received an e-mail on November 24th but due to the Thanksgiving holiday did not see the e-mail until December 1st. The e-mail looked to be from one of Precision Flooring’s regular vendors, HMI Hardwoods LLC. The e-mail stated that HMI Hardwood’s bank account number had changed and any payments needed to be sent to the new account number. So, Ms. Armes transferred a payment of $49,511.09 to HMI’s new account. Several days later she received a phone call from HMI Hardwoods that there was a problem. When Karen Armes looked at that e-mail a second time she noticed that the e-mail address was different by one letter and she didn’t notice. Armes had to make another payment to the real bank account for HMI Hardwoods, leaving Precision Flooring with a $49,000 loss.
