Newport By-Pass Still On Track For Fall 2025 Opening
Progress is continuing to be made on the Newport By-Pass being built to alleviate traffic in downtown Newport. Four bridges are part of the 5 mile stretch of road. Two of those bridges are complete, the other two are still under construction. When it opens in the fall of 2025, the US 321 Newport By-Pass will allow traffic going to and from Greeneville to avoid the downtown area. It will also allow for quick connection to I-40 for those traveling from Parrottsville and Greene County as the bypass will begin just north of Hwy 160 and will dump out at Hwy 25-70 on the west side of Newport around Thinwood Drive. The bypass will be a five lane highway and TDOT says the goal is to help ease the traffic congestion in downtown Newport.
If you have to travel in downtown Newport in the afternoon, especially on Fridays, you know what we’re talking about. Once again, TDOT says the project is on track to be completed next fall.
