Newport Grammar School Helps C-5 In Peanut Butter Drive
The Cocke County Cradle to Career Coalition, known as C-5, hosted a peanut butter drive in September with the Second Harvest Food Bank. The goal was to collect a large amount of peanut butter for Cocke County food pantries. Peanut butter is one of the most frequently requested items by food banks because it is shelf-stable protein-rich and most kids love peanut butter. Several community partners participated in the food drive including First United Methodist Church of Newport, PHOENIX Packaging, Cocke County Partnership, plus the Newport Grammar School, and many individuals across the county who donated peanut butter.
All total, the C-5 coalition partners wound up donating 1,863 lbs. of peanut butter. Jennifer Ellison of C-5 says that the Newport Grammar School did a great job in collecting the shelf stable food offering a pizza party to the class that brought in the most jars of peanut butter. Coming in first place was Cindy Witt’s class who collected 422 jars. Then, Karen Chambers’ class collected 337 jars of peanut butter.
