Newport Police Called To Assist With Unruly Prisoner.
Three Newport police officers and a Cocke County Corrections officer suffered minor injuries when an inmate at the jail became unruly Monday evening. The Newport officers were called to the jail to assist a corrections officer who was trying to move a prisoner from one cell to another. The inmate in question was 41 year old Richard Carnal. He threatened any officer who tried moving him, saying he was going to fight anyone who dared touch him. Carnal was given several commands to comply with the corrections officer, but refused. When threatened with a taser, told the officer ” I got something for you” and reached into an area of his bedding. That is when officers moved to forcefully restrain Carnal. A taser had no effect. Two Newport officers were struck by Carnal and a third sustained a laceration to his arm. Carnal was finally placed in restraints. He has been charged with assaulting a first responder.
