Newport Police Investigating Car Fire

Newport police are investigating after someone set a vehicle on fire Friday. A man called police Friday afternoon to report that someone had stuffed a piece of cloth into the gas tank of his 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and lit it on fire. There was fire damage to the rear driver’s side of the vehicle, but the fire was extinguished before the whole car erupted in flames. The situation could have been much worse as the car was set ablaze right next to the victim’s house.
