NUB Awards Two Grants
Newport Utility Board held their December meeting on Tuesday. During that meeting, Newport Utilities gave out a couple late Christmas gifts to Douglas Cherokee and Cosby Elementary School in the form of $20,000 community care fund grants. The Community Care Fund is a grant program from the TVA which supports community programs such as education, health and housing assistance, workforce development, and innovation & technology. Douglas Cherokee provides utility assistance for individuals in Cocke County that are challenged to pay their utility bills. The grant funds will support their community assistance program, which provides assistance to individuals that don’t necessarily fall into the low income/poverty threshold but have been challenged by circumstances beyond their control….such as the pandemic.
Cosby Elementary School will use the grant funds from Newport Utilities to expand their technology programs, including computers at home and in the classroom.
By the way…the next meeting of the Newport Utility Board will be next year…on January 25th.
