Nullification Bills Fails In Committee
A new bill in the Tennessee General Assembly that would provide the roadmap for the state to nullify any “unconstitutional federal law” is now being delayed. Republican Representative Bud Hulsey of Kingsport, who is sponsoring the bill, says federal court rulings are onions, not law…but the constitution is very specific. He says the framers of the constitution went to great lengths to make sure there was a separation of powers in the federal government. But, on Tuesday, the bill failed to get a second when it was put up for a vote in the Senate State and Local Government Committee. Each bill needs to get a verbal approval before it can move forward. The committee chairman recommended the bill be sent to a summer study for further research which gives the bill a chance to come back next year. Democrats say the nullification bill is dangerous and harkens back to pre-civil war times. Hulsey says his bill is not meant to divide, but rather to protect the state from unconstitutional federal acts.
