One Person Still Missing In Haywood County
Haywood County NC officials said on Monday that there is still one person who is unaccounted for in the aftermath of last Tuesday night’s flooding in that county. That flood saw the Pigeon River rise to levels never seen before in that area. One woman who got swept away from the flood waters stated that the water was 5 feet deep when it swept her out of her home.
Five people are confirmed dead…all living in the Cruso community southeast of Waynesville along US Hwy 276. At least three of the victims were seasonal residents who lived in the Laurel Bank Campground on the banks of the Pigeon River. That campground no longer exists as it was totally destroyed by the flood. The Haywood County sheriff stated that there have been 10 calls of possible looting in the Cruso community…the highway patrol has taken the lead in policing that area for looters…no one has been arrested at this time.
